Dublin is no longer one of the top 20 cities in the world for students

And it’s all because of how pricey everything is.

DUBLIN HAS FALLEN 17 places in a new survey of the best cities in the world for students.

Having placed 15th last year in the QS Best Student Cities, the capital this year comes in 32nd.

The ranking says that while Dublin has a number of good universities, an excellent student mix and is safe, pollution-free and socially tolerant, the big problem is how affordable it is.

“Its weakest point is affordability, with international tuition fees averaging around US$18,000 (€14,500) per year. But in terms of general living expenses, Dublin may not be as costly as you expect – in Mercer’s 2014 Cost of Living Survey, it comes significantly below many of the other cities featured in the QS Best Student Cities,” the survey says.

The survey says that international students make up 27% of the student population in Dublin, and that “the craic” is worth visiting for.

“Ireland’s capital has become a more multicultural and cosmopolitan place in the past several decades, but at its heart retains a tradition and culture that is all its own.”

That wasn’t enough, though, and Dublin has slipped out of the top 20.

The top 10 cities for students are:

  1. Paris
  2. Melbourne
  3. London
  4. Sydney
  5. Hong Kong
  6. Boston
  7. Tokyo
  8. Montreal
  9. Toronto
  10. Seoul
