Supermarket chain expects fish sales to double this week

SuperValu says its supermarkets will sell about €1 million in fish this week – more than double the usual – ahead of Good Friday.

SUPERMARKET CHAIN SuperValu has said it expects the sales of fish in its stores this week to reach the €1 million mark – almost double the amount it sells any other week.

The sale of fish and fish products has spiked this week ahead of Good Friday, when Catholics traditionally abstain from eating meat.

84 per cent of people declared themselves to be Catholic in the 2011 Census, though continually low numbers attending rites like Mass indicate that not all those who were listed as ‘Catholic’ participate in all of the religion’s rites.

As well as abstaining from meat and alcohol, Catholics traditionally limit themselves to one full meal and two ‘collations’, or smaller meals.

SuperValu says salmon remains its biggest selling fish, though sales of hake and rainbow trout are also up significantly in the last few years.
