Homes evacuated for hours overnight after viable bomb thrown

The Army has now handed the bomb parts back to gardaí for their investigation.

A NUMBER OF homes in the Mayfield area of Cork city were evacuated overnight after a viable bomb was thrown at a house at around 3.30am.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that an Army bomb disposal team attended the scene of the incident, on Shannon Lawn, and removed the device.

There were no injuries and no property damage was reported.

The scene remains sealed off this morning, and the device has been taken away for further examination by Defence Forces experts.

“The device was assessed to be viable and was removed to a safe military location for deconstruction & further examination,” a Defence Forces statement confirmed.

“Items of evidential nature have been handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation.”

The statement confirmed the Army team arrived at the scene shortly after 5am and that the area was declared safe at 07.10am.
