Two swimmers rescued from Howth cliff after being caught by strong currents

The two men were rescued after a tourist heard their shouts for help.

TWO SWIMMERS WERE rescued off the coast of Howth in north county Dublin after getting into difficulties last night.

The men had been swimming when they got overwhelmed by strong currents just before 7pm.

The two men managed to clamber onto some nearby rocks from where they tried to scale the cliffs at Howth Head  to get to safety but quickly realised that they would not be able to do.

Exhausted, the two men shouted for help and a passing tourist raised the alarm by running to a nearby coffee shop where the employees called the Irish Coast Guard.

Fifteen members of the Coast Guard’s Cliff Rescue Team from Howth were at the scene with minutes. One climber managed to climb down the cliff and reach the two men, secure them, and recover them up the steep incline to the top of the cliff.

The two men were described as being slightly shaken after the ordeal. They were examined by medics but did not require any further attention.
