GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock.

EVERY WEEKDAY evening, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know by 5pm.

1. #BURNED: Staff shortages within Dublin Fire Brigade could lead to the temporary closure of its training centre and overtime cuts, according to correspondence seen by TheJournal.ie. The fire service contacted SIPTU earlier this month to say that if staff overtime continues at the current level,  the brigade’s budget for 2011 would be overspent by €1.7 million.

2. #CONSULTATION: The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton has launched the consultation process for the planned replacement of five employment dispute resolution bodies with a new two-tier system. The new system should reduce the number of cases being heard, cut the time it takes to get a hearing, and provide support for those seeking an early resolution to their workplace dispute.

3. #RIOTING: British Prime Minister David Cameron said today that Britain must confront the culture of laziness, irresponsibility and selfishness behind last week’s violence. He described the riots as a “wake-up call for our country” and said that “social problems that have been festering for decades have exploded in our face”. Meanwhile, police in Birmingham arrested a seventh person today in connection with the murders of three men who were struck by a car and killed during last week’s riots.

4. #EGYPT: An Egyptian judge has banned live television broadcasts from the trial of ousted president Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak appeared in court today for a second time on a stretcher to face charges of ordering the killing of anti-government protesters during the uprising which forced him from power. He is also charged with corruption.

5. #ART THEFT: A Rembrandt drawing worth an estimated €175,000 has been stolen from a Californian hotel. The pen-and-ink drawing was being displayed in a bid to attract a buyer.
