GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five stories you really should check out by 5pm.

1. #RACE FOR THE ÁRAS: Dana Rosemary Scallon has threatened to pull out of the presidential election if details of a business dispute within her family are “dragged across” the campaign. In the meantime, we’ve been putting together a list of the remaining Presidential debates.

2. #HUMAN RIGHTS: The UN has published its draft report following last week’s review of Ireland’s human rights – and revealed that Ireland has rejected recommendations to legislate for abortion in line with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of A, B and C versus Ireland.

3. #BOY RACERS: A new survey from the Road Safety Authority has found that one in five young male motorists have raced another motorist on the roads. The RSA’s figures, to mark Irish Road Safety Week, also said that drivers aged between 17-24 were five times more likely to die on the roads than other motorists.

4. #NOBEL PRIZE: US academics Thomas Sargent and Christopher Sims have shared the Nobel Prize for Economics, for their work in examining the cause-and-effect relationship between government and central bank actions and the markets. One of the two 68-year-old winners was on an early train between colleges when he learned of his victory – and continued on his journey nonetheless.

5. #FORWARD THINKING: Robbie Keane has been officially ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s make-or-break Euro 2012 qualifier against Armenia tomorrow evening. Simon Cox has been named in the starting line-up – ahead of West Brom team-mate Shane Long – while boss Giovanni Trapattoni warns that even if Ireland get the draw they need to make a play-off, Keane may not be fit to participate.
