TWO FIREFIGHTERS HAVE been hospitalised after they were stoned by a group of youths in north Belfast last night.

The attack happened at around 8.30pm on the New Lodge Road, where fire services had arrived to attend to a car fire.

A man had earlier been pulled out of his vehicle by two youths who drove it a short distance away before it was set alight.

The firefighters – a male and female – were attacked when they arrived at the scene.

The owner of the car was not injured during the incident, which local politicians have condemned overnight.

In a statement, SDLP MLA Alban Maginness called those responsible “a disgrace to us all”.

“Those who were behind it clearly do not reflect the majority of people who live here,” he said.

As a community we must come together to protect the very best among us, and there are few who display such selfless courage as firefighters day in and day out.

The PSNI have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
