“SHE WAS A great leader, a great prime minister, a great Briton [pause, drop a tone] and a great Conservative”. To a soundtrack of Elgar-esque swirling strings, David Cameron’s soundbite-length take on the Iron Lady’s legacy kicks off a ten minute glowing video tribute to the late Tory leader.
Played at the opening of the party’s annual conference in Manchester, Conservative figures past and present pop up throughout the package to pay tribute to their former leader, whose ashes were interred in a private ceremony at the weekend following her death earlier this year at the age of 87.
According to the BBC’s reporters at the venue, the tribute – interspersed with sepia-toned images and archive footage – received a prolonged standing ovation, with many conference-goers “visibly moved by the sentiments expressed”.
Thatcher’s death in April sparked a heated debate over her legacy, with critics saying her policies left millions of people jobless and helped create a culture of greed.
To save you the trouble of watching all the way through, TheJournal.ie can confirm that no such critics appear in the video.
Not even in the background, by mistake.
