Mike Murphy - not happy about the scheduling time of the Ireland's Favourite Paintings series. He doesn't seem to have an issue with the guest presenters. RTÉ
the persuaders

The 10 celebs championing ‘Ireland’s Favourite Paintings’

RTÉ reveals the rest of the list arguing the case for each of the top ten… what do you think of it?

MIKE MURPHY HAS described the 10.15pm scheduling time for RTÉ’s Ireland’s Favourite Painting – the show he is currently seen presenting – as a “Cromwellian edict of arts programming being banished into the Connacht of broadcasting, ie, at or past most people’s bedtime”.

RTÉ responded to Murphy’s letter to the Irish Times this week by saying that the time is “working”, that the response from the public has been strong and “the internet is alight with debates about which painting to vote for”.

Whatever you think of the time the programme is going out, the list of guests – each of whom champion their favourite painting – figures some people not necessarily known for their art appreciation talents. Snooker champ Ken Doherty argued the case for Caravaggio’s Taking of the Christ; Sr Stanislaus Kennedy spoke for William John Leech’s A Convent Garden. Tonight Sharon Corr will champion Frederic William Burton’s The Meeting on the Turret Stairs and Ardal O’Hanlon will look at Sean Scully’s Wall of Light Orange Yellow.

RTÉ has now revealed the remaining six personalities to champion their favourite painting:

  • Brendan O’Carroll – The Eve of St Agnes (Harry Clarke)
  • Pat Shortt – A Connemara Village (Paul Henry)
  • Mary O’Rourke – A Lady Writing a Letter (Johannes Vermeer)
  • Adi Roche – A Family (Louis le Brocquy)
  • Maria Doyle Kennedy – The Artist’s Studio (John Lavery)
  • Joe Duffy – Communicating with Prisoners (Jack B Yeats)

Viewers can then vote on their favourite painting on the RTÉ website.

Will those listed above be likely to persuade you of the merits of their chosen painting? Over to you…
