GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #INVESTIGATION Five people have been arrested in a major garda operation, Operation Wireless, targeting organised crime. Gardaí arrested four men and one woman in Dublin using European arrest warrants. It is believed there may be more arrests today.

2. #MAP FAIL Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said he is concerned over a fake ‘airport’ mistake on Apple Maps, which he said could mislead pilots who are not familiar with the area. The map incorrectly states that Airfield Park (a farm), is an airport. Minister Shatter said that the error poses a major safety concern and that he has contacted Apple to have it corrected. That’s not the only error that we have spotted in Apple’s map of Ireland, however.

3. #RYANAIR A report by the Irish Airport Authority has confirmed that Ryanair aircraft carried extra fuel and complied fully with European Union operations procedures when inspected in Spain last year. The three planes had been inspected after diverting to Valancia en route to Madrid after declaring an emergency due to the amount of fuel they were carrying.

4. #HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY Marriage in Ireland rose by nearly 10 per cent in just five years, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show. There was a 550 per cent increase in people getting remarried between 1996 and 2011, with numbers rising from 6,641 to 42, 960.

5. #SMUGGLERS Retailers in the south-east have claimed that Wexford has become a hub for illegal cigarette smuggling. Yesterday, a €1.5 million haul of smuggled cigarettes was found in Enniscorthy town. However, a local shop owner told TheJournal.ie that sales of cigarettes are down up to 20 per cent on last year’s figures, and he would imagine half of that is due to smuggling.
