EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #BANKING: Bank of Ireland Public Interest Directors have been paid over half a million euro since their appointment in 2009, it emerged today. At an Oireachtas Committee, Joe Walsh and Tome Considine said they each received salaries of around €90,000 this year.

2. #DRUGS: Eight men have been arrested after Gardaí seized 5,800 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of €4.6 million, in coordinated raids yesterday. The plants were seized in raids in Longford, Westmeath, Louth, Wexford, Dublin and Mayo.

3. #WAGES: Ireland has one of the largest gaps between high and low earners of any other EU country, according to statistics from Eurostat. A significantly higher proportion of Ireland’s workforce are classed as ‘low-earners’ than the average for either the EU or the Eurozone.

4. #SYRIA: An Irish citizen who left the country a number of months ago to fight on behalf of rebel forces in Syria in their attempts to oust Bashar-al-Assad is reported to have been killed. Before he left Ireland he said he was joining the rebels to defend the weak and help to build peace in the world.

5. #CHARITY: A new report shows Ireland is the most charitable country in Europe and came second in the world behind Australia despite the recent economic downturn. The research revealed that 79 per cent of Irish people donate to charity which is 51 per cent higher than the global average.
