GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you hit the road.

1.#800 BABIES: An independent TD wants the site of an alleged mass grave in Tuam declared a crime scene. Catherine Murphy said that the 800 babies buried there were “starved” and “discarded” as though they were “sub-human”.

2.#ROTATING CHAINS: Sinn Féin look set to hold the Lord Mayor of Dublin position for the centenary of 1916, TheJournal.ie has learned. An agreement between the party and a group of independents will see the chains of office rotated for the next five years.

3.#LIVE REGISTER: The Live Register fell again last month, with men making up the bulk of the 1,600 people who are dropping their claims. ISME, however, says that the lack of government strategy was slowing down recovery.

4.#FIANNA FRIENDS: After months of acrimony and enmity, Fianna Fáil has decided not to censure Mary Hanafin. Hanafin made headlines by running for, and winning, a council seat in Blackrock against the party’s wishes.

5.#CANADA: A massive manhunt is ongoing in the Canadian city of Moncton, where man has shot dead three policemen. Police named the shooter as Justin Borque – a 24-year-old man from the New Brunswick city, which didn’t have a single homicide last year.
