1. #AER LINGUS Talks between Aer Lingus and pilots have continued through the night in a bid to avoid travel chaos from tomorrow. Talks broke down on Saturday morning but both sides accepted an invitation to return to the table yesterday evening. The row centres on working rosters and a spokesperson has told RTE that there has been very little progress.
2. #MAGDALENE THE UN Committee against Torture has recommended that a statutory inquiry be carried out into allegations of abuse at the Magdalene Laundries. The Committee says prosecutions should ensue in appropriate cases and that victims are entitled to adress and conpensation. Last month the advocacy group Justice for Magdalenes submitted a report in Geneva.
3. #KILDARE Five people have been hospitalised following a road crash in Co. Kildare. The 3 men and 2 women, all in their twenties were travelling in a single vehicle when it crashed on the Clane to Celbridge road, and 3 of them are said to be in a critical condition. Meanwhile one man has died following a crash on the M1. Two others were injured in the accident near the Donabate junction.
4. #PRESIDENT Former EU Parliament president Pat Cox is applying to join Fine Gael this week in a bid to secure the parties nomination for the presidential election. Meanwhile MEP Gay Mitchell also says that he’s considering entering the race.
5. #PORTUGAL Portugal’s voters have gone to the polls and have decided to end 6 years of leftist rule. The country’s conservative Social Democrats are set to lead the next coalition government. Socialist party leader José Sócrates has conceded defeat and has accepted responsibility for his party’s downfall.
6. #GOLAN HEIGHTS It’s reported that the death toll has risen to 23 after Israeli forces opened fire on pro-Palestinian protesters who were attempting to cross the border on the Syrian frontier.
7. #CHILDREN British Prime Minister David Cameron has given his backing to proposals aimed at tackling the “sexualisation of children”. Christian charity Mother’s Union will today produce a set of proposals to address the “commercialisation of childhood”. Nine retailers, many of which trade in Ireland, have signed up to a set of guidelines on childrens’ clothing.
8. #IRAN Iran is to complain to FIFA after its womens’ football team was banned from a qualifier for next year’s Olympics because of their Islamic kit. Their team strip includes a headscarf, and authorities in Iran say they have already reached a compromise on the kit with FIFA.
9. #GAGA Lady Gaga’s new album ‘Born this Way has been banned in Lebanon after it was deemed to be “offensive to Christianity”. The Christian Post reports that the country’s Security Department has impounded copies of the album “on ground of bad taste”.
