GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Good morning. Here are nine things to know as you start your day.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know as you kick off your day.

1. #CROKE PARK: It is believed that an agreement is close to being reached in talks on the Croke Park extension, following the arrival of the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin. The talks continued through the night following the walkout of four unions.

2. #MURDER: Vincent Martin Crowe, who is accused of stabbing Wexford man Kenny Meyler in Australia two weeks ago, has had his charge upgraded from causing grievous bodily harm to murder.

3. #GOWING: Clive Sharp, who has admitted killing Offaly vet Catherine Gowing, will be sentenced later today. Today’s decision will determine the minimum jail term that Sharp is to serve before he can be considered for parole.

4. #OSCARS: Daniel Day-Lewis has become the first actor to win three Best Actor awards in a night of frocks, falls and egos. To catch up on things as they happened, check out our liveblog here. For those who want all the winners in one place, we also have you covered.

5. #RESEARCH: €300 million worth of research and development funding has been announced by government. Seven research centres are to benefit from the funds, with 800 researcher positions directly supported.

6. #TEENS & MONEY: A new survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions has shown the impact that Ireland’s recession is having on our teens. The survey found that 80 per cent were worried about the costs of third level education, with only 58 per cent saying that they expected to find work in Ireland after college.

7. #IRISH WATER: A quarter of the 1,600 jobs which are to be created to install water meters throughout Ireland will be given to the unemployed, graduates and those employed in small businesses. 400 of the jobs are to be set aside in what the Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, said would help allow skilled workers to “re-enter the workforce”.

8. #EARTHQUAKE: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has hit Japan. While the quake caused buildings in Tokyo to sway, the country’s meteorological agency reported that there was no risk of a tsunami.

9. #KATIE TAYLOR: Olympic gold medal winner Katie Taylor made it two wins out of two this weekend, defeating Maike Klueners in last night’s sold-out “Road to Rio” promotion in Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. The win followed her Friday night victory against Karolina Graczyk of Poland.
