Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know by 9am.

1. #RONANKERR Police in Northern Ireland are holding a third man in connection with the murder of the police constable in Northern Ireland a week ago. The man was arrested in Omagh last night. Meanwhile the PSNI have been given extra time to question the two other men they have arrested.

2. #FISHERMEN The search for two missing fishermen off the coast of Dublin has ended after two bodies were recovered in the early hours of this morning, RTÉ reports. Ronan Browne, 26, and David Gilsenan, 41, had been missing since 1 April after they had gone fishing off the Skerries coast.

3. #DEVICE Police in Northern Ireland say that they have carried out a controlled explosion on a ‘viable device’ that was found in a vehicle along the main Dublin to Belfast road outside Newry in Co Down. The road had been closed since Thursday night because of the security alert. The A1 southbound has now reopened, RTÉ reports.

4. #SHUTDOWN The US government has avoided being shutdown after president Barack Obama and congressional leaders reached an eleventh hour deal on government spending. Republicans and Democrats had been at loggerheads for weeks over a deal and failure to reach an agreement would have resulted in the shutdown of national parks and tax-season help lines amongst other services.

5. #SECRET DEALS A report in today’s Irish Independent says that controversial TD Michael Lowry and former deputy Jackie Healy-Rae were each given three positions on state boards to hand out to supporters. These were part of deals struck with former Taoisigh Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen.

6. #SUB SHOOTING Details of yesterday’s shooting on board a nuclear submarine in the UK which killed one crewman and seriously injured another have been emerging with the leader of Southampton’s city council telling the BBC he disarmed the gunman on board the HMS Astute. A Royal Navy serviceman remains in custody on suspicion of murder.

7. #MORTGAGES The government is working on a mortgage plan to help lenders who are suffering in the current climate, according to the minister of state for finance Brian Hayes. According to the Irish Times, he said the government is “fully cognisant” of the difficulties some homeowners are facing.

8. #QUEEN’S VISIT Sinn Féin has called for any protests against the visit of her majesty next month to be peaceful as Queen Elizabeth and her husband Price Phillip are an “elderly couple”, according to the party’s deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald, the Irish Times reports.

9. #DELUSIONAL A former Aer Lingus steward who ate a cookie laced with marijuana became delusional and paranoid after a transatlantic flight took off, reports the Irish Independent. Miguel Saez Sanchez believed there were fleas and lice on his face as he claimed he was unfairly dismissed following the incident, an employment appeals tribunal heard.
