GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Welcome to the long weekend. Here are nine things to know as you get started.

EACH DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #TWISTERS: A mother and baby were killed, along with three others, as Oklahoma City was ravaged by powerful tornadoes overnight. Dozens more were injured as vehicles overturned and entire neighbourhoods were flooded.

2. #BROKE: Attorney Rich Coan, the official in charge of Seán Dunne’s bankruptcy proceedings, agrees with Ulster Bank that part of the case should be heard in Ireland, according to RTÉ News this morning.

3. #A BREACH OF TRUST: Little Harvard, one of the creches at the centre of Prime Time’s investigation, has strongly defended itself in a letter to parents, stating it does not accept the “general thrust of the footage”. Read the correspondence here.

4. #ABORTION: Labour Minister Pat Rabbitte has given his support for an amendment to the proposed abortion legislation which would allow for terminations of pregnancies in cases of fatal foetal abnormality. “My personal view is that it would make good sense to include that,” he told TheJournal.ie in an interview this week.

5. #ATTEMPTED MURDER: PSNI detectives investigating the attempted murder of two of their colleagues arrested a 25-year-old man in Shrewsbury, England this morning. He has been taken to Northern Ireland for questioning.

6. #TURKEY: Water cannon and tear gas have been used against groups of demonstrators in fresh anti-government protests in Turkey, according to Al Jazeera. The unrest started on Monday over a redevelopment plan at Taksim’s Gezi Park but it quickly grew into a broader fight against what citizens see as an increasingly authoritarian government.

7. #SLOW DOWN: It has been a bad year so far on Irish roads with the death toll already at 78, significantly higher than this time in 2012. Gardaí have urged motorists to slow down this bank holiday weekend, promising a crack down on dangerous driving. Since 7am yesterday, 321 drivers have been caught speeding.

8. #BREAKING BAD: Lethal drug crystal meth has ravaged whole communities in the US and the same is happening here in Ireland, according to homelessness advocate Fr Peter McVerry. TheJournal.ie‘s Amy Croffey investigates the role played by television programmes such as Breaking Bad.

Meanwhile, the Irish Examiner reports that heroin has been blamed for eight deaths in the Kerry town of Tralee over the past two years.

9. #NORTHERN IRELAND: Did you know that Hollywood actor Vince Vaughn made a film about the historical and social significance of the murals in Belfast and Derry? Check out more about Art of Conflict here.
