GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: Ministerial pay cut; 21-year-old questioned about Mayo killing and the identities of the world’s richest people are revealed.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know with your morning cuppa.

1. #MINISTERIAL PAY: The first act of the new Fine Gael/Labour government has been to announce a reduction in ministerial pay. The coalition government announced it had reduced the Taoiseach’s pay by 6.6 per cent from €214,187 euro to €200,000, while Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore will earn €184,405. Ministers’ pay is down to €169,275 and the yet unnamed Ministers of State will earn 130,042. The junior ministers are also likely to be appointed today. Do you think the ministerial pay cuts go far enough? Have your say in our poll – and see what everyone else thinks.

2. #FIRST DAY: On his first day as Taoiseach, Enda Kenny will travel to Brussels to meet Jose Manuel Barroso to introduce him to Ireland’s new policy priorities, and confirm our commitment to the EU.

3. #MAYO KILLING: A 21-year-old man is continuing to be questioned by gardaí after a 46-year-old separated mother of four was found stabbed in the head and beaten at her home near Castlebar yesterday. The body of the woman, who has been named locally as Noreen Kelly-Eadon, was discovered by her 16-year-old son.

4. #EVICTIONS: The Irish Examiner reports on a warning by Threshold that thousands of tenants face eviction as investors who bought at the height of the boom are defaulting on their mortgage repayments.

5. #FITNESS TO PRACTICE: A doctor who telephoned and texted a patient to try and set her up with a friend has appeared before a medical fitness to practice committee, the Independent reports. The same doctor was sanctioned in 2008 after he told a patient that epilepsy could be seen “as a sign of the devil in you” and that epilepsy could be caused by sexual activity, the Irish Times adds.

6. #DALAI LAMA: The Dalai Lama is to retire his political responsibilities to concentrate on his position as the spiritual leader of Tibet, the AP reports.

7. #LIBYA: Security forces working for the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi detained and beat up a BBC news team, subjecting them to mock executions, and only releasing them after 21 hours, the BBC reports.

8. #BILLIONAIRES: Forbes magazine has published its list of the world’s billionaires – there are 1,210 in all, while Moscow is the city most heavily populated with billionaires. Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim is still the world’s richest man, while the reclusive Mumbai-resident Pallonji Mistry and Dermot Desmond – whose wealth has collapsed to a still-not-to-be-sneezed-at €1.6 billion make the list for Ireland – make the list for Ireland, along with John Dorrance and Martin Naughton.

9. #PRINCE ANDREW: Pressure is continuing to mount on the British royal family after it emerged that the Duke of York entertained convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein  at the Queen’s Norfolk estate – and allowed him to land his private jet at an RAF fighter base nearby.
