Nine things to know this morning…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things we really think you ought to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #ABUSE Five historical complaints have been received in the last month about abuse at a boarding school in Cork. RTÉ reports that the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart says these most recent allegations at Carraig na bhFearr are additional to those which prompted an initial investigation at the school. The Gardaí and the HSE are investigating concerns raised about the welfare of children who attended the school.

2. #MOBILE PHONES A Tesco Mobile survey has  found that 37 per cent of eight-year-olds have a mobile phone. The survey also found that a quarter of eight-year-old who have phones are bringing them to school. The Irish Examiner reports that primary teachers are now calling for a review of the Stay Safe programme with relation to text bullying, while the Anti-Bullying Centre at TCD has said that schools need to update their anti-bullying policies.

3. #LIBYA Colonel Gaddafi’s supporters have said that they won’t surrender after being given a deadline of Saturday by rebels. The rebels are predicting that Gaddafi’s ultimate downfall is imminent.

4. #JOBSWATCH Jobs minister Richard Bruton is on his way to Carrick On Shannon in Leitrim today to talk with management of the MBNA credit card facility. It comes in the wake of an announcement by Bank of America that it’s selling off its UK and Irish credit card operations, reports Newstalk. Around 750 people are employed by MBNA at Carrick on Shannon.

5. #DRUGS A cannabis growhouse has been discovered at a house in Ballyboughal in North Dublin. Gardaí say 350 plants were seized along with 4 kilos of herbal cannabis with a potential street value of €200,000.

6. #OVERBOARD A California man has been arrested after witnesses said he threw his seven-year-old son overboard following an argument. Sloan Briles said that he and child were just messing around, but witness on the tour boat at Newport Harbour reported seeing him hitting the child, who was crying.

7. #BODY SCANNER A full body scanner is on its way to Dublin Airport. However it’s not for passengers; the machine will be tested by airport staff from next month, according to the Irish Times.  An airport spokeswoman has said there is no need for privacy concerns and that no full body images will be displayed.

8. #LUCKY ESCAPE A man who impaled himself on the blunt end of a gardening pruning implement has doctors at a US hospital to thank for saving his eye, after the handle of the implement went in through his eye socket and down his throat. Don’t believe us? Check out the x-ray.

9. #NO SHOW Sinead O’Connor has announced that she won’t be appearing on the Late Late Show this Friday evening after all. The singer tweeted yesterday that she will “absolutely never discuss” why she pulled out because it would be “just not a safe situation to be in”. She’s said that she came to the realisation after chat with a researcher on the show. Her latest tweet says:

  • Clerical Abuse. We can identify those who have had convictions or allegations against them quite simply by introducing a system of Garda Clearance as is the case with health care workers.
    Let’s do it.

  • Well the system of Garda checks we have at the moment is so slow , I have experience of waiting up to 8 months for clearance for staff and they have to wait and can’t start work without it, so we would have to get a better system set up If other people have to be checked. I get police clearance without any problem for people from all over the world , African countries, Burma , Korea in a matter of days etc but when It comes to the Irish ones it’s wait wait wait. The foregon police clearances are professional certificates but the ones from Ireland are just the original form the person filled in returned with ticks on them to show they checked out the persons addresses ones it looks like and a Garda stamp on it and no accompanying certificate . Infind it less than satisfactory . So good luck with that plan.

  • So Sinead o Connor isn’t going to be appearing naked or clothed on late late show…just gotta get a new host now and I might be tempted to watch it on Friday

  • I agree with Sinead, even though we are gettin better… Tubridy has a parochial little mind that gets off on scandal and humiliation, and he passes it covertly under the radar as asking ‘devils advocate’ questions. No doubt she’ll be seen as a prima donna, but I know where she’s coming from.

  • Say what you like about Sinead; she was bang on about the Church. I think she’s great.

    • She was, and she was crucified for it at the time… Even though we’ve thrown out the ‘outward’ structure of the church, we still have to purge the mentality of a flock. We hate someone who takes a risk. We hate someone who goes outside the ordinary. We hate someone who bares a bit of their soul. This may be a safe country relatively speaking, when it comes to violence. Emotionally and psychologically it’s a f#cking landfill site.

  • Is no one else going to say something about the quality of her (Sinéad’s) tweet? It certainly made me laugh trying to decipher it!

Oh will someone please make Sinead O Connor go away why has she suddenly sprung back into the media ranting about being sex starved and ‘don’t leave me alone in a room with a bowl of fruit’. Puke. There’s a reason you’re sex starved hun. Though why this is a dilemma for the concern of the Irish public is beyond me.
