Good morning to you! Here’s nine things you should know before 9am on this Wednesday.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine things you need to know as you start your day.

1. #ABUSE: Fresh claims have been made against the top Catholic Church official in Ireland Cardinal Seán Brady over his alleged failure to protect children from notorious paedophile priest Fr Brendan Smith. After an investigation, BBC’s This World said that Brady had been given the names and addresses of boys being abused but did not ensure their safety even after the 1975 secret inquiry.

2. #AFGHANISTAN: During a surprise visit to Kabul on the anniversary of the death of Osama Bin Laden, Barack Obama said that America would “finish the job” in Afghanistan and “end this war responsibly”. A new deal has been agreed with Afghan president Hamid Karzai which outlines what future role the US will take in the country.

3. #TREATY: The first live television debate about the Fiscal Compact referendum took place at TV3 studios last night where Fine Gael’s Simon Coveney and leader of Fianna Fáil Micheál Martin teamed up for the Yes campaign against Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald and Socialist Party veteran Joe Higgins of the No side. In case you missed it, our editor Susan Daly liveblogged every mention of austerity and stability, as well as the shushing, the rolling of eyes and the waving of big sticks and guns.

4. #REFERENDUM: Following the debate last night, Coveney ruled out the possibility of holding a second referendum if a Yes vote is not achieved on 31 May. He told TheJournal.ie that Europe would move forward with the treaty even if Ireland fails to ratify it.

5. #HOUSEHOLD CHARGE: An analysis of data supplied by the Department of the Environment has revealed that counties whose residents have a lower income show lower compliance rates with payment of the household charge. Donegal, Monaghan and Offaly had the lowest income totals and also the highest boycott rates of the new €100 fee.

6. #QUINN: The Irish Times reports from the High Court that Seán Quinn was in tears when describing how his employees were “treated like dogs” during Anglo Irish Bank’s “very underhand” takeover of his business last year. He was giving evidence in a contempt case taken by the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (formerly Anglo Irish Bank) over the alleged transfer of assets.

7. #BREASTFEEDING: According to RTÉ, a new report has suggested that children who are exclusively breastfed for their first six months are 38 per cent less likely to be obese when they reach nine-years-of-age.

8. #IRISH TONY: Once, the Broadway musical based on the Irish film of the same name, leads the pack by some way after the Tony Awards nominations were revealed yesterday. The show featuring Glen Hansard’s songs is up for 11 gongs, including best musical, director, actor, actress and choreographer.

9. #PARADISE ISLAND: Fancy having your own island hangout? Well, if you have a spare £600,000 Inisliroo Island on Lough Erne in Fermanagh is up for sale.

  • Why are we shocked that Brady knew more than he’s let on. They are dirty lying child abusing bastards. They moved one of them from crumlin to delgany where he continued to abuse, Fr McNamee.. We jail them for 2 years for raping 10-20 boys, really 2 years…… And still people support them, it’s crazy..

  • How come if breastfeeding is known to be so good that we have such bad rates in Ireland. There is poor commitment to it even among the health professionals. It’s seen as difficult, and people think they won’t be able to get away from their babies and that it will hold them back. It’s the best start for any child . And don’t get me started on Cardinal Brady.

  • If you expect to breastfeed in public, don’t get your knickers in a twist when I throw you a cheeky wink, ladies.

  • What can help with the issue of obesity is not allowing 9 year olds to pig out on junk ,nothing to do with 9 years earlier as to wheather they were breastfed or not.Get a grip

  • Nobody said anything about breastfeeding 9 year olds, the point was about exclusivly breastfeeding a child for first six months to ensure good future health. it’s true 9 year olds should not be obese, no child should be and if there is something that can help with that issue why don’t we promote it.

  • The usual kick the Pope brigade comments, of course there should never have been any cover ups from the start and those involved should pay the price. But do not tarnish the whole Catholic for the actions of a few. The Catholic church educated the Irish people when it was denied by its english masters, such short memories. The people in the republic may be backsliding in their faith but up north its growing, we dont forget our past.

    • I think not forgetting the past was, and is, the whole problem in the north. Clinging to primitive superstition doesn’t help either.

I’m glad, despite growing pains, that I am seeing religion exposed in my lifetime for the hypocrisy it is and Ireland finally growing up as a country in this respect. I’m also glad my children won’t grow up in a country where repressed men in skirts cover up for predators.

    • @ Martin… REALLY… THe whole Catholic church and its members knew what was happening and did nothing, that makes the church GUILTY as hell. Of course if it was your ass that was being screwed by one of the you might feel differently. Yes they educated the population… they also controlled the people, murdered children in their care, and moved Paedophiles around so they could rape again and again… YES you’re right they did us all a favour so they did. With those attitudes stay where you are, in the foreign country where you reside… The one with all the religious hatred for all those years… Yeah religion is truly great

    • Backsliding might be an unfortunate choice of phrase in this context.

    • So tell me, Martin, how long back should we be remembering? The 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s? As long as there has been an Irish free-state/republic, I would say that the social influence of the catholic has been conservative and retrograde. That’s just their role as moral guardians.

Trying to keep women down, trying to deny free health care, trying to slow social progress, abandoning single mothers, creating an atmosphere of fear for anyone perceived as different. And that’s without the actual rape or murder of children and young adults in their care.

Whatever credit you believe the catholic church generated over it’s history in Ireland has been well and truly squandered by the hierarchy in their attempt to control and dominate Irish society from the foundation of the state and in their warped moral compass that sees protection of priests and the reputation of the church as more important than the care of the most vulnerable in society.

What we are left with are individuals within the church who have done good work, supported people, provided care and assistance to people, in spite of the organisation they are part, rather than because of it.
