HERE ARE THE things we learned, loved and shared today as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#CO KERRY Gardaí have appealed for witnesses as they continue to investigate the deaths of a woman (27) and a child (8) in Killorglin. It is believed the pair are a mother and daughter and died a violent death. A local county councillor said that the “whole area is in shock” after news of the deaths emerged.

#G8 The G8 leaders have said that they have agreed to negotiate the biggest bilateral trade deal in history. Negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will begin in Washington next month. Meanwhile, as protests continued against the G8, a 19-year-old was arrested in Bedford Street, Belfast, at a protest and charged with disorderly behaviour, resisting police and failure to remove a disguise when required. His case was fast-tracked and he was fined in court.

#OBAMAS As Barack Obama took part in the G8 summits in Belfast before the event kicks off in Fermanagh, the First Lady, his wife Michelle Obama, brought their children Sasha and Malia to Dublin city. But before their visit – which took in a trip to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College and a special performance of Riverdance at the Gaiety Theatre – Michelle and Barack spoke to students in Belfast this morning, drawing parallels between the Troubles and the American Civil War.

#HEALTH A safety warning has been released by the European Medicines Agency over giving codeine tablets to children under 18. It said that it should only be given to children aged over 12 if other painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen have not relieved their pain. The body might convert codeine to morphine (as a way of treating pain) faster than expected in children, leading to high levels of morphine in the blood stream, which can then cause respiratory depression.

#STUART HALL Former BBC presenter Stuart Hall (83) has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for sex assaults. He admitted to 14 charges of indecently assaulting girls as young as nine. The former ‘It’s A Knockout’ presenter was described by prosecutors as an “opportunistic predator”. The abuse surfaced following a police  investigation into revelations about the late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile.

#RAIDERS Four masked and armed raiders shot a man in the leg during a burglary in Mitchelstown, Co Cork. They tied up the man and the other two female occupants of the house before making off with a small amount of cash and a BMW car. The man suffered minor injuries. Gardaí are appealing for more information and for witnesses.

THINGS WE LOVED

• Amputee sprinting has had an incredible seven days, with multiple records being set. This fascinating article looks at the future of the sport - and how low the 100m world record can go.
• These incredible photos of Ethopia’s Danakil Desert show that it may be beautiful, but it’s deadly too. Temperatures can reach as high as 145 degrees, plus it smells like rotten eggs… so you’re probably best off visiting it in slideshow form.
• Aww. Someone was worried that Patrick Kavanagh (well, Patrick in statue form) might get wet in the current unpredictable weather – so they furnished him with a handy plastic hood.
