The Evening Fix...now with added reactions from One Directioners

Things we learned, loved and shared today…

It looks like Richard Branson may have been getting marketing tips from Michael O’Leary. He was flashing a message in Edinburgh today for the first Virgin Atlantic Little Red flight from Heathrow. (Image: Andrew Milligan/PA Wire/Press Association Images)

HERE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#IRON LADY: The former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died. She was 87. Reactions to the death of the controversial Conservative leader have been mixed with muted statements from Ireland offering a stark contrast to glowing tributes from the US.

#SAVITA: The inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar heard from her husband Praveen today, RTÉ News reports. He told the coroner that his wife made three requests for a termination over two days at Galway University Hospital but was told “it’s a Catholic thing and we won’t be able to help you”.

#WATER: Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore told reporters in Turkey today that domestic water charges will not be introduced in January next year, as originally planned. He said the government will wait until a metering system to accurately measure usage at each property is in place.

Opposition parties have now accused the Labour leader of seeking to avoid “electoral meltdown”.

#JOBSWATCH: It has been a mixed day on the jobs front with three separate announcements from companies operating in Ireland. First, some good news from Novartis and Hewlett-Packard which are both planning to expand their operations, creating 250 new positions. However, there was a blow from Avon Cosmetics which ceased trading in Ireland today, leading to the loss of 400 jobs.

#CHOCOLATE THIEVES: Five tonnes of the hazelnut chocolate spread Nutella were stolen from a parked trailer in Germany at the weekend. Police believe the thieves are part of food-and-beverage-stealing ring.

#TIT BONHOMME: The investigation into the sinking of the Tit Bonhomme in Cork last year found that fatigue was the biggest factor in the tragedy which led to the death of five crew members.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • Taking a stroll down memory lane to recall the best things about living in a housing estate. WATER FIGHT!
  • We’d like to think the DailyEdge.ie‘s coverage had something to do with this.

Then there was a lot of this:

And LOADS of this:

In fact, Counteract Magazine probably had the best round-up:
