The Winners:

• Gerry Adams – the Sinn Féin leader was elected in Louth amidst jubilant scenes, with almost 2,000 votes over the quota.
• Fergus O’Dowd – who was also elected in Louth for Fine Gael.
• Richard Bruton – who was elected on the second count in Dublin North Central, with 100 votes ahead of the quota.
• Frances Fitzgerald – who was elected in Dublin Mid-West on the eighth count, and said she was “honoured” people had put their faith in her.
• Brian Lenihan – who is a winner, sort of, after he became the first Fianna Fáil candidate to be elected – and he only got on by a whisker, after he failed to meet the quota and was elected on the fifth count.
• Fine Gael’s Meath East election team – who pulled off some spectacular vote management in the constituency, as Shane McEntee and Regina Doherty got 8,794 and 8,677 votes respectively. Labour’s Dominic Hannigan, who topped the poll but hasn’t yet been declared elected, tweeted “Wow! Really pleased to top the poll. Thanks to the 8993 other voters who gave me their Number 1s :)”
• Sean Sherlock – the Cork East candidate has been elected with 11,862 first preference votes – 500 over the quota.
• Tom Hayes – who was elected on the fourth count in Tipperary South.
• Jimmy Deenihan – who was elected on the first count in Kerry North West Limerick for Fine Gael.
• Counters in Dublin West – who are on their way home already, after Brian Lenihan was elected on the fifth count.
• Mary O’Rourke’s grandchildren – who are going to be seeing lots more of her, after she’s announced her retirement from politics and says she’ll be writing a book and spending time with the grandkids.

The Losers:

• Martin Mansergh – the Fianna Fáil TD won’t be returning to the 31st Dáil, after he was knocked out in South Tipperary.
• Enda Kenny – who’s been forced to leave Castlebar by helicopter for Dublin, ahead of being elected to the 31st Dáil. There’s been a delay in the count in Castlebar.
• Knocked out – Also eliminated in the last hour were John Lyons of People Before Profit, Mick Murphy of the Socialist Party, Independents Stephen Ball, Ronan Carolan, Daithi Stephens, Green Party’s Fiona Irwin, Manus McMeanmain (CSP), Seamus McDonagh (WP), Patrick Nulty (Lab), Victor Boyhan (Ind), Carl Haughton (Ind), Trevor Patton (Ind), Michael Dolan (FF), Sharon Keogan (Ind), Sean O’Buachalla (Green), Dick Cahill (GP), Johnny Gogan (GP), John Joseph McCabe (Ind), Fergus O’Rourke (Ind), Benjamin Ashu Ahsu-Awrah (Ind), Michael Kennedy (FF).
