Wrap Up

This condom is tougher, more sensitive and funded by Bill Gates

The University of Wollongong could receive $1 million from the Microsoft billionaire for their design.

THE BILL AND Melinda Gates Foundation is looking to build a better condom.

Gates argues that redesigning the contraceptives would increase their use, which would have knock-on effects for health, population and economic considerations.

The foundation has funded 11 such ideas and the University of Wollongong in Australia have posted this research update on their design, which is a “tough hydro gel”.

The design is “act feel and look like real skin”, but is also extremely strong, not breaking in the way that latex is prone to.

The researchers are now in a competition with ten other designs, with Gates prepared to put $1 million up for the winning team to mass produce their condom.
