Belfast man sentenced to three years for threatening to kill Prince Harry

Ashraf Islam, who was born Mark David Townley, walked into a police station in London last May and admitted his plans.

A MAN WHO walked into a London police station and told an officer he wanted to kill Prince Harry has been sentenced to three years in prison at Isleworth Crown Court today.

31-year-old Ashraf Islam, who had no fixed address, was arrested after making the threat at Hounslow police station on 23 May.

The man was born Mark David Townley in Belfast but changed his name by deed poll in 2010 following his conversion to Islam. He normally lived in Northern Ireland but travelled to London on 23 May having flown from Thailand, via Hong Kong.

He checked into a hotel and later attended the police station where he told a uniformed officer that he had an intention to kill the British prince the following day.

Islam was immediately arrested and taken into custody and officers undertook an investigation which involved a search of his hotel room and the seizure of his computer. No weapons were found in the search.

He was charged two days later and pleaded guilty to threatening to kill Prince Harry. He has been in custody since then, until today when he appeared for sentencing at Isleworth Crown court.
