THREE GERMAN TOURISTS visiting the Aran Islands and a local man were injured over the weekend after an accident involving a horse and trap.
Galway Bay FM reports that the incident happened on the island of Inis Mor on Saturday, July 2nd.
German tourists – three women – were riding in a pony and trap, driven by a local man, when the horse became separated from the cart. At the time the four people were travelling down a steep hill in the direction of the Dun Aengus fort on Inis Mor. All were four were injured.
A spokesman at the Department of Transport said the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Unit in Valentia, Co Kerry received a call regarding the incident at 11.50am on Saturday.
“The Coast Guard helicopter in Sligo was immediately tasked together with North Aran Coast Guard Unit,” he said.
Gardai administered emergency assistance to the tourists and the driver of the pony and cart at the scene.
He added that the helicopter arrived at the scene at 12.24pm and transported the four to University Hospital Galway. It is understood that their injuries are not life threatening.
