THESE ARE THE things you need to know as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#TIA SHARP It’s been a day of revelations in the tragic case of the disappearance of of 12-year-old London girl Tia Sharp. Yesterday police confirmed that they had found a body in her grandmother’s house, and today her grandmother was arrested on suspicion of murder. Her partner Stuart Hazell has also been arrested along with a third man. Police today apologised for the delay in finding the body.

#JOHN JOE Excitement is building in Mullingar this evening ahead of John Joe Nevin’s Olympic final bout against Luke Campbell at 8.45pm. Meanwhile details of Katie Taylor’s homecoming ceremony in her home town of Bray on Monday.

#ROAD DEATHS Three brothers are among four young men who died in a road crash just outside Tullamore yesterday. The men were travelling in a Honda Civic which was involved in a collision with a mini bus. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

#PAUL RYAN Irish-American congressman Paul Ryan has been announced by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s pic as his running mate for the US election later this year. Ryan has gone into the race fighting, declaring that current president Barack Obama has a “record of failure”. Then Romney just had to go and do this:

#RENTS There have been calls for an inquiry after it emerged that €32 million paid out by the state in rental deposits for those on rent allowance hasn’t been repaid in the last six years.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • Usain Bolt made one Olympic volunteer very very happy with this gesture before his 200m win last night (via Buzzfeed)
  • Did you know that Dropbox is more than just a place to keep files and share stuff? Neither did we. But LifeHacker tells us that the possibilities are endless (well, not endless, but there are a good few)
  • Want to see two dogs carrying a present? Of course you do:

THINGS WE SHARED

  • Mullinagar’s fourth most famous son (after Joe Dolan, Niall ‘One Direction’ Horan and of course, John Joe Nevin) Niall Breslin aka Bressie has tweeted that he and Horan will be in the ExCel for the fight tonight. While Bressie was performing in Sligo last night, he got the crowd to record a little message (you might want to turn the volume down first). Meanwhile #mullingarshuffle trended on Twitter today after Niall ‘One Direction’ Horan mentioned it in a tweet

  • re the Tia Sharp story, here we go again with the usual police and social services b.s excuses, the’ll soon be trotting out the same old tried and tested comments like” we will revue our policies” “procedures will be tightened up and followed more carefully” and the classic “although we knew there were problems, we did’nt act quickly enough or give enough support ” and ” this can’t be allowed to happen again”. how many times have we heard this? yet no-one is ever brought to book , too many chief’s and not enough Indians, thats the real problem with the police and social services today, too busy doing paper work and looking for promotions to carry out the job properly.

  • Mitt Romney; keep up the good work.
With this, and the coverage of your successful trip to the U.K., Poland and Israel, you have shown that you have it in you to fill the shoes of the great George Dubya Bush.

As someone who likes sick jokes (see below), I look forward to your presidency, and the war you will wage in Iran.
I completely agree with your stance on the Iranian terrorist state, and believe, as do 51% of American voters, that the Ayatollah Khomeini must be deposed.

My sources tell me that he has two bombs which are 10 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima in 1845, and that he plans to drop those two bombs in Belmont, Massachusetts, Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and San Diego, California.

  • That’ll be a great clip if, in four years time, Romney is correct!
