THE OPERATOR THAT runs the toll on the M50 motorway in Dublin has introduced new measures aimed at tackling attempts by drivers to avoid paying the free flow charge.
eFlow say that so far 106 motorists have been penalised for tailgating, an act whereby motorists drive within inches of HGVs in an attempt to hide their licence plate number from overhead toll cameras.
Since October last eFlow has been working with Garda roadside patrols in four special operations to identify tailgating motorists.
Most recently, between 16 February and 3 March, a total of 41 vehicles were stopped and served fixed penalty notices.
eFlow has installed new cameras that capture the rear licence plate number of all vehicles and say that the combination of both front and rear cameras means offenders will find it hard to avoid paying the €3 toll.
Over 100,000 vehicles use the free flow system on the M50 in Dublin every day, according to eFlow.
