AN AIR STEWARDESS on Southwest Airlines was forced to step in and remove a crying baby from its parents after its mother slapped the child in the face on board a commercial flight, according to reports.

Authorities in New Mexico said Beverley McCurley seized and took care of the child until the plane landed in Albuquerque, and only agreed to give the child back to its parents after questioning them about the origin of the child’s black eye.

Her parents attributed the bruise to an injury caused by the baby’s uncle’s dog.

The 13-month-old child was taken to the back of the plane where McCurley rocked it until it fell asleep,

The airline has downplayed the incident, saying its employee only offered to hold the child while its parents, Lee Ann and Joseph Cid, were arguing -but state police said the attendant had done the right thing by trying to guarantee the safety of the child.

“It was a solid move from the part of the flight attendant to take custody of the child, Albuquerque airport’s chief of police said. “It neutralised the situation, it calmed eveybody down.

“McCurley further stated the mother appeared agitated with the child and that the husband continued to yell at his wife to shut up due to her screaming at the child.”

LILY ALLEN has confirmed that she’s three months pregnant with her her boyfriend, Sam Cooper.

The broody singer told The Sun newspaper that it brought her “great pleasure” to confirm her pregnancy.

“It goes without saying that we are both absolutely delighted.”

Amid rumours of her emerging bump, Allen yesterday briefly tweeted, “nothing to share” – but this morning posted a picture of herself holding a copy of today’s Sun, which carried the story on its front page, with the caption:

Not quite front page worthy, but anyway… surreal.

The singer had told Elle magazine a few weeks ago that she was taking time away from her career to fulfil her dream of becoming a mum with her builder boyfriend.

“Kids take up your whole life, particularly in the first two or three years,” she said at the time. “So it wouldn’t be very responsible of me to commit to doing a world tour if I had a baby.”

Allen also rebutted claims that, at 25, she was too immature for motherhood. “I don’t think I’m that young to have a baby. My mother had me when she was 23. It’s difficult as a woman who wants a family.”

Allen suffered a miscarriage in January 2008 while dating Chemical Brothers DJ Ed Simons, and described the event as “the worst time of my life” last year.

Commentators had speculated Allen had been eating for two after they noticed Lily sporting a bump in her latest music video, appearing in Professor Green’s ‘Just Be Good To Green’.

THE WOMAN at the centre of the gruesome French infanticide case is reportedly ‘relieved’ that her secret is now out in the open.

Dominique Cottrez, a nursing assistant in her mid-40s, confessed on Wednesday to killing ten of her own children by suffocation, after the new occupants of her old house found their bones in the garden.

Now her lawyer, Frank Berton, says “she doesn’t have to carry this on her conscience any more, and that’s a kind of relief.” He added that she was “tired, worn out and battered down” after facing intensive police questioning.

Cottrez will now undergo psychological tests to determine whether she was fully responsible for her actions, and said he believed that prosecutors may have been “a bit quick” to say she was fully aware of what she had done.

Her two adult children, who had no idea of their mother’s actions, said she was a “doting grandmother … who supported us at all times.”

It is believed Cottrez began smothering her children after enduring difficulties delivering one of her two surviving children, but was able to hide her pregnancies in her 20-stone bulk.

Her husband, a local councillor, also claims to have known nothing of his wife’s actions.

Cottrez’s is the third high-profile case of infanticide in France in the last eighteen months, with all three mothers understood to be suffering from ‘pregnancy denial‘.

Cottrez could face charges of voluntary homicide of the babies.
