TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR could face an ignominious premature exit from the UEFA Champions League after an embarrassing 3-2 defeat against BSC Young Boys of Bern in the first leg of their qualifier last night.

But the biggest talking point online last night wasn’t the football.

Instead, it was  the inevitable gags about the unusual name of Spurs’ opponents – as well as the fact that Young Boys play at the, ahem, Wankdorf stadium.

Here’s our (publishable) pick of how bad it got on Twitter:

  • @Duncotron: Redknapp should put on Crouch, it’s just young girls he has trouble with. #Spurs #Youngboys
  • @MatthewRogerson: 3-1 now…guess it’s true what they say, #YoungBoys don’t keep clean sheets
  • @goofyvillain: Sky guy on the CL draw.. “When Young Boys of Bern came out, I bet many fans of Spurs were licking their lips”…..#YoungBoys #CL
  • @lahaine13: Looks like Young Boys are pummelling Spurs, can Spurs come from behind against Young Boys? #youngboys
  • @adamclarke501: Quote of the night from Alan Smith “These Young Boys look fit”. #YoungBoys #CL
  • @Ian_LFC: If #Youngboys hold on to a 2 goal lead they can go to White Hart Lane and just park the school bus
  • @Caseyracing: These #youngboys are unreal. Bet uncle harry didn’t realize they were actually not young fellas. This would be a financial nightmare
  • @SwissMinx: Swiss commentator:”Another Young Boys’ player had his hands where he shouldn’t have had.” #Tottenham vs #YoungBoys

On Boards.ie, meanwhile…

  • ntlbell: spurs could put these young boys to bed now
  • baldshin: Wonder if they’ll swap shirts after?
  • Mr.Nice Guy: If you allow Young Boys get on top of you you’re in trouble.
  • Raskolnikov: My favourite commentary moment from the first half from the Sky commentator: ”Can the Young Boys keep it up?”.
  • Nailz: Young Boys are toying with them
  • abouttobebanned: Has Harry Redknapp been watching any videos of young boys?

None of the jokes could come close, however, to Soccernet’s news piece about Young Boys’ new stadium being opened in 2005.

Spurs welcome Young Boys to White Hart Lane for the return leg in a week’s time.

CONSUMERS HAVE been left out of pocket after a popular hotel bookings website appeared to disappear – and take their money with them.

Users on boards.ie have shared stories where international hotel bookings made through the website were not honoured by the hotels themselves – who maintain they never received any bookings from the site.

Other hotels said they had cancelled the bookings on the understanding that 1800hotels.ie had gone bust.

One man told RTÉ’s Liveline that bookings made for his wedding tomorrow in Malta had never actually been made, and that negative comments he left on the company’s Facebook had been deleted within minutes of posting.

In many cases the website had taken payment from customers making bookings – but had evidently not passed on such a payment to the hotels being booked.

A source claiming to be close to the company told Boards users paying with credit cards to request a cashback, or those with travel insurance to claim refunds in that way.

They also said that the company – which has an international parent based in the US – is trading with limited stock, and that the Irish company is unofficially no longer trading.

Another user said that a friend who had worked with the company had been laid off.

The website has since disappeared, and customers calling the phone line are directed straight to a voicemail service, but can’t leave a message because the mailbox is full.

Its website had previously said it was “performing system maintenance that will affect hotel availability” – but when it briefly returned, returned every query by saying there were no hotels available.

Customers with bookings made through the company are advised to contact their hotels directly to verify the status of their booking.

1800hotels.ie is known by many for its aggressive marketing campaigns sent over fax machines.
