IRELAND’S TOP universities have failed to place in the world’s top 200.

The latest list of the world’s most prestigious universities released by Jiao Tong University in Shanghai lists Trinity College as Ireland’s top university, but Trinity is only listed in the world’s top 300. The college is however, ranked between 75-123 in Europe.

UCD places between 301-400, while UCC slipped down from that grade to the 401-500 grade. The list is dominated by US universities with Harvard at number one followed by Berkeley and Stanford.

The list is considered highly influential, although it has come in for criticism for placing too much reliance on the number of Nobel Prizes and journal articles published.

Trinity does however place in the Top 50 in the Times Higher Education Supplement rankings, but promised revisions of the ranking may hit Trinity.

A UCC LECTURER who was disciplined for sexual harrassment after showing a female colleague an article about the sex life of fruit bats has released a single on iTunes.

Dr Dylan Evans, who lectures in behavioural science at UCC, is trying to raise enough money to cover legal costs arising from his challenge to the college’s sanctions.

After an internal investigation, UCC upheld the complaint. Earlier this summer, Evans applied for a High Court judicial review and is hoping the court will quash the college’s finding. He claims he was denied the right to challenge the allegations made against him.

The Irish Independent reported that the female colleague involved had lodged a previous complaint against Evans.

An online petition calling for sanctions against Evans to be dropped has been signed by over 3,800 people.  The petition calls for the college to change its policy on harassment so that it “cannot be used any longer to limit academic freedom and stifle debate.”

The story generated media interest around the world, appearing on the Huffington Post, the Telegraph, and New Scientist.
