AT LEAST 24 people have died in a landslide in eastern Uganda. Torrential rains triggered the collapse in the Bulambuli district, where residents fear as many as 35 people may have been killed, Reuters reports. Hundreds of people died in a similar incident last year – after which authorities vowed to relocate up to half a million people to avoid a repeat of the tragedy.

TORRENTIAL RAIN IN northern Turkey has led to flooding and landslides, causing at least 12 deaths.
Dozens of homes in Gundogdu, in the Rize province, were hit by the landslides following heavy rains beginning on Thursday night.
Many of the town’s residents were eating as the landslide hit, after a day of fasting for the religious month of Ramadan.
11 people were originally reported dead with two more missing. However, later on Friday the body of an elderly woman was recovered, bring the death toll of the sudden landslide to 12.
Speaking to Anatolia news agency, survivor Buruk Aka recounted the terrifying speed of the disaster:
We realized that the house was going to collapse. It did before I could say, ‘Run it’s going to collapse! …I managed to throw myself out but my mother-in-law and my brother could not escape. They were buried in the landslide.
Officials have said that at least seven people have been rescued.

View more pollsPoll: Should Ireland be tougher on multi-national companies when it comes to tax?
AT A HIGH-profile US Senate meeting, technology giant Apple was accused of using Ireland as a ‘tax haven’.
The multinational firm, which employs 4,000 people in Ireland, reportedly avoided paying €34 billion in US taxes by negotiating a tax rate of less than 2 per cent with the Irish government – significantly lower than that nation’s 12.5 per cent statutory rate.
The Senate heard that American children are losing out on education because Apple is transferring profits to Irish subsidiaries.
However, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny has denied that Ireland is a tax haven and rejected claims that authorities had negotiated deals with multi-national companies.
So, today we want to know, what do you think? Should Ireland be tougher on multi-national companies when it comes to tax?
