A Date For Mad Mary

Element Pictures Distribution / YouTube

What we know

Irish film – directed by Darren Thornton – with a strong female cast, about a young woman (rising star Séana Kerslake) the titular Mad Mary, who’s fresh out of jail and trying to find a date for her best friend’s wedding.

What the critics say

  • “The plot ties things up just a little too neatly at the end for some tastes, but then in a way it feels harsh to deny the central characters a little closure and catharsis. Here’s hoping the film finds a wider audience at home and abroad as it’s a new Irish film that needs to be seen.” - Spoool.ie
  • “The profound story of love and friendship comes across with the power of a true story, as emotionally muted Mary struggles to accept that her best friend Charlene (Charleigh Bailey), has moved on in her absence.” - RTÉ

Café Society

Movieclips Trailers / YouTube

What we know

Woody Allen’s latest, with some swingy jazz, an ensemble cast of big names, and a 1930s setting. Stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart.

What the critics say

  • “There’s nothing very original about this love-triangle dilemma, especially in a Woody Allen film, where it directly mirrors so many of the setups in his earlier work, notably the adulterous tangle of Manhattan.”- Variety
  • “ The fine cast includes Parker Posey, Blake Lively, and a rubicund Ken Stott as Bobby’s father, but it’s Stewart who takes the honors, allowing Vonnie’s shyness to shade into mystery.” - The New Yorker

The 9th Life of Louis Drax

Movieclips Trailers / YouTube

What we know

Our own Jamie Dornan stars alongside Aaron Paul in this movie about a boy who ends up in a coma. But what’s the deal with his parents? Based on the best-selling book.

What the critics say

  • “To its credit, The 9th Life of Louis Drax, akin to director Alexandre Aja’s previous work, is almost impossible to pigeonhole. At once a touching fantasy drama with its feet deep in the YA market, at others a bizarre, somewhat intense psychological drama.” - FlickeringMyth
