TRAMORE TOURISM HAS said today it is doing everything it can to save the Metalman and its pillars as it supports the establishment of a limited company to deal with the transfer of ownership of the landmark.

The Metalman and pillars are currently privately owned the company Irish Lights which is keen to dispose of the structures and Waterford County Council declined to take ownership due to budgetary constraints.

The new limited company, Tramore Heritage Limited, which is registered as a “non profit” company will take over ownership and will manage the monuments.

Today Tramore Tourism said that “with the support of Failte Ireland, the County Council, and the Mayor of Tramore, a continual effort was and is being made to develop the Metalman as an accessible part of the towns’ landscape and an attraction that will bolster civic pride for the whole county”.

New plans involve the building of a safe walkway that would be “the jewel in the crown of a local heritage trail” extending from the Metalman to the sand dunes.

The tourism body said there is no intention to sell the structures and that none of the directors of the new company, who are all active members of Tramore Tourism, will receive any personal profit.
