Coordinator of National Traveller MABS, Nuala Ní Ghabhann, said:

A significant number of Travellers are unable to access or use mainstream financial services that are appropriate to their needs.

“Financial exclusion compounds issues of social exclusion; this is why it is so important that we highlight the challenges Travellers face in accessing financial services, and promote better awareness of saving and money management skills amongst Travellers.”

National Traveller MABS Caravan Loan Guarantee scheme was designed to enable Travellers to access loans at reasonable rates from their local credit union for the upgrade, repair or replacement of a caravan that serves as a family home.

A review of the scheme found that people on low incomes are credit-worthy.
