Tsunami passes over Taiwan, Indonesia braces for impact

The Pacific tsunami has hit Taiwan causing minimal damage – it is due to hit the vulnerable Indonesia islandssoon.

A TSUNAMI SPREADING outwards from Japan has hit Tawain, causing minimal damage.

The height of waves hitting the east and northeast Taiwanese coasts measured at just 10 centimeters, according to the Central Weather Bureau, reports the Jakarta Globe. The country has lifted its tsunami warning and does not expect further damage, reports Focus Taiwan.

The tsunami is due to hit the Indonesian province of Papua next: authorities have been working to ensure people have been evacuated from the beaches in the area, reports Al Jazeera.

Authorities are worried that the damage could be intense in some of the lowest lying Pacific islands - and even wash over them entirely.

The Philippines news service ABS-CBN has reported that the tsunami has now been recored on the Isabela coastline, in Indonesian territory. The first wave also recorded in Ilocos Norte, Batanes.

The Jakarta Globe reports that the Climatology, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that a tsunami will next head to Papua, North Maluku and North Sulawesi.
