TV3 out of the IFTAs despite two nominations

TV3 HAS OFFICIALLY declined to take part in this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards.

The station made the decision two months ago after taking a “long look” at the situation, said Maureen Catterson, head of publicity.

“We just came to the conclusion that the IFTAs focused on public service broadcasting – and that is not our strength,” Catterson told TheJournal.ie.

“There is also a financial element to it,” she added. “Rather than spend money on submitting programmes for consideration, we can spend it in other areas.”

The station has wished the awards’ organisers the best of luck and Catterson said that TV3 has informed the IFTAs of its intentions.

Despite the decision taken back in November, two of TV3′s programmes did get a nod from the nominating panel earlier this month.

Both The Apprentice and Head Chef were nominated in the Best Reality Programme category.

“Independent companies are entitled to put forward their own programmes,” explained Catterson.

The Apprentice is produced by Screentime ShinAwiL and Head Chef by Sideline Productions.

There will be no formal attendance from TV3 stars or executives at the announcement ceremony on 11 February. However, staff have not been told not to attend.

“That has been left to their discretion but as a station, we won’t be taking part,” concluded Catterson.

The decision is not entirely unexpected as the station has previously voiced complaints that its programmes are ignored by the Irish Oscars.

RTÉ’s Love/Hate leads the nomination list with placement in 10 categories, including Best Drama and Best Actor.

  • If Tallafornia is one of TV3′s strengths I’d hate to see their weaknesses!!!!!

    • Yes fake tan, hair dressers and taxi drivers spouting how good they are at everything in life is not exactly worthy of headlines but no doubt it will probably attract big numbers.
This race to the bottom is becoming tiresome.
On another note I am looking for z list celebrities for my new tv show

  • How many award Ceremonies do we need it’s mostly another outing for the air heads and scobies to get pictures in tabloid mags.

  • Why is it that RTE can get the license fee and allowed to get revenue also from advertising too. The BBC are also a public broadcaster who cannot advertise. RTE pay the likes of Ryan tubrity more than treble of what USA president gets. Imagine they pay for eastenders and we all know that it’s free to air!

    • The population of England far exceeds that of Ireland so therefore the license fee couldn’t possibly cover the cost of RTE alone.

The household broadcast charge to replace the license feeds a good idea in principle but people who do not watch television should be exempt. It’s unfair that some people have to pay while others get way with it

    • Fair point Garreth and they do produce some good stuff, but why should a state broadcaster have the luxury of advertising revenues to boot. I do recall not so long ago that Mr Ryan Turbidy would not take a wage cut like everyone else? He is practically public service, and no im not totally anit Ryan but they (the RTE elite) dont show what they earn and everyone in the public service has too! Why are these excempt. This award cermony is a slap on the back excercise which is grossly unfair from the word go for the likes of TV3.

    • No one that I know in the public service has disclosed their wage

I don’t think anyone should have to disclose what they are paid

And as someone working under a contract I would fight very hard before taking a pay cut as he did

    • Gareth you can easily get that information from the IPA directory which lists all grades within the public sector and the pay structures. The people working in the public sector particularly in lower grades are suffering and the croke park agreement has still to be tackled! The point really is the IFTA’s are not to far removed from the lovely girls competition that was held on craggy island and a programme that RTE would not fund! Best of luck Garreth I do hope that Public Service workers get treated fairly as I dont think they will be, unless your at the top!

“IFTAs focused on public service broadcasting – and that is not our strength.” – I don’t think broadcasting full stop is TV3s strength. They’ve been coasting along for the past few years with fluff celeb gossip programmes and second rate reality shows – Xpose, FYI, Apprentice, Tallaghfornia, repeats of friends, Come dine with me, Ireland AM etc etc The only things worth watching on it are the Champions league footage and Vin B.

RTE have at least had a stab at original programming with Love/Hate and Raw, both of which have been acclaimed. One TV channel that doesn’t get anywhere near the praise it deserves is TG4. They’ve been the first to break a lot of the big US TV shows like The Wire, Nip.Tuck and True Blood.

    • Champions league football i disagree. If you support man utd you will be ok. If not then thank god for sky. TV3 have driven me mad over the years with their continued showing of man utd matches if they are playing on their broadcasting night. No other team gets a look in. Tv3 can burn in hell for all i care.

  • Brilliant, fair play to them.
Also, Sinéad if you could, would it be possible to put a picture of the Vincent Browne show or The Apprentice as your main article picture instead of the shot of the Tallifornia cast? VinB and the Apprentice are more representative of TV3 in people’s minds and longer established shows on the station.

  • broadcast fee? not a good idea in principle because its quite simple whats goin on. this charge is not just to cover broadcasting, its a sneaky attempt at yet another tax! it has nothing to do with broadcasting official lines are “most young people are viewing tv online” rabbittes words not mine. as for rte losing 25M? nope, there just not makin 25M. what next? a tax for havin a wee or a shower? oh ye, that’s comin in water tax’s, a tax for providing heat in your home (if your lucky enough to have a roof over your head ay this rate) oh ye that’s also on the way in carbon tax, oh wait I forgot that’s on top of your household charge, which effectively means even though your house has been bought you will still pay a little rent Every year to the government, sounds like British colonialism times to me. if you want to talk about principle ask rabbitte why he hasn’t asked the internet providers to enforce a levy to cover broadcasting or passed on the responsibility to the providers, oh wait, the government wouldn’t be able to pocket a private companies money, ah now I see, or should I say there you go, no profit for government, no point doing it, and that is the principlr, nothing more nothing less

  • It’s a shame TV3 won’t be putting the extra money towards subtitling their Irish home produced programmes for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Ireland and only opt to buy in expensive subtitles for trashy UK programmes
