How Twitter reacted to the Magdalene Laundry report

From Enda Kenny’s non-apology to the record of previous governments, here’s what people on Twitter had to say about the Magdalene Laundry report.

THE LONG-AWAITED REPORT by Senator Martin McAleese into the Magdalene Laundries was published at 4pm today on the website of the Department of Justice.

The report found evidence that the Irish State was directly and fundamentally involved in the laundries which saw more than 10,000 women kept within their walls from 1922.

Survivors have reacted with dismay to the non-apology from Enda Kenny and senior members of government. The Taoiseach this afternoon said he was sorry for the stigma that the women at the laundries had to live with and for the delay in a government report on the issue,  but stopped short of issuing a full apology on behalf of the State.

There has been a strong reaction on social media to the report. Here is just some of what people have been saying this evening.

  • I have said it once and i shall say it again. Enda kenny t.d. Taoiseach is by and far the luckiest man to ever become Taoiseach. He is a coward. The only reason he’s afraid to apologise, is because his government will have to pay righteous compensation.

He’s not afraid to give billions to faceless bankers and bondholders, who gambled and lost. While families who struggle to feed throw children, he plays Europes whipping boy yes man. Enough is enough. Go now kenny, we stumble from one mishap to the next every month you are in charge.

Corruption corruption corruption, when are we going to put a stop to this. A small few controlling everything. Controlled women’s lives and ruined them. Enough is enough time for PEOPLE POWER.

  • What was going on in these laundry’s was in the Ether at the time ‘ a blind eye was given to it ‘ they should get compensation and quick ‘ who would believe an apology from a politician anyway

  • I am not sure that any politicians or any government holding power feel any real sense of responsibility, culpability or sense of true contriteness for what happened. I doubt that there is any sense of regret, sadness or compassion.

The reason that an apology was not tendered is because The Taoiseach feels no ownership of what happened and is distant from this. We have observed this before, it could be compassion fatigue but I think that it is more because most politicians are egotistical are they are not naturally empathetic.

Of course what happened was desperately unjust, profoundly unfair, despicable, indefensible and truly vicious in its effect and cruelty but the victims are older women, most of whose lives have been maimed but our pols are indifferent. Sad but true.

  • This country makes me sick! Cover ups and brown envelopes. Those poor women in the laundries, those poor young boys being raped by priests, I mean how brainwashed do you need to be to believe in this horrible institution? Beliefs are one thing but covering up these crimes are another. The sad thing is there will never be an apology nor justice because that is the sick twisted brainwashed lap dog society we live in.

  • Slave owners and paedophiles abound. And they wonder why their numbers are falling. I’d love to get a few nuns and a few Christian brothers and open my own unpaid labour laundromat. We’d make a killing. Then we could pay some compensation to the victims and take the remainder of what’s left and shift this jackass, spineless government out of power.
