Tax defaulters

Two tax defaulters pay out more than €3m to Revenue

Revenue Commissioners take in a total of almost €13m in three months from tax defaulters.

THE REVENUE COMMISSIONERS have brought in almost €13m from tax defaulters in three months – over €3m of that came from two individual settlements.

Robert Galbraith, a company director from Kate’s cottage Curracloe, Co Wexford, had to pay €1.88m to Revenue. That was the largest settlement made in the period from the start of July to the end of September this year. Grocer James Geoghegan, from South John Street in Pimlico, Dublin made the second biggest settlement at €1.52m. The third biggest settlement was made by John J Brennan from Bawndaw, Gracedieu East, Waterford at €679,552. He is described in the Revenue’s defaulters list as a farmer, property developer – and accountant.

The list also details fines and taxes paid by people who were caught smuggling and illegally selling cigarettes, smuggling alcohol and selling counterfeit alcoholic spirits.

A total of over €84m was brought in by the Revenue during July to end of September as a result of its audits and investigations. This figure includes tax owed, but also interest and fines accrued.
