POLICE IN THE UK HAVE launched a search for a second body after announcing last night that they believed they had found the remains of Sian O’Callaghan.
After arresting a 47-year-old man from Swindon, police said that the location of two bodies had been identified to them and later emphasised that only one of those two bodies had been found.
They would not elaborate on the identity or gender of the other body.
Sian O’Callaghan was last seen leaving a nightclub in her home town of Swindon, Wiltshire, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Her boyfriend, with whom she shared a flat, raised the alarm when she failed to return home that morning. Phone records showed that her mobile received a message at Savernake Forest and hundreds of people participated in searches of the 4,500-acre forest.
The officer leading the investigation, Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher said in a press conference that although the body discovered yesterday had not been formally identified, he was “quite clear” it was Sian, the PA reports.
“I have informed Sian’s family, who are obviously deeply distressed, and I would ask you please to give them time and space to come to terms with what’s happened,” he said.
The man arrested on suspicion of two murders and the kidnap of Sian O’Callaghan has been named locally as taxi driver Christopher Halliwell. Police began searching his home in Swindon yesterday and have erected a white police tent in the front garden.
The Telegraph reports that police investigating the murder of Melanie Hall, 25,have approached officers working on the Sian O’Callaghan investigation. Hall’s remains were found near the M5 in Gloucestershire in 2009, 13 years after she was last seen leaving a nightclub in Bath.
