A FATHER IN the UK has been jailed for murdering his baby son.

Piotr Sobczyk will now serve a minimum term of 16 and a half years after being found guilty earlier today.

His child, Oskar Sobczyk, had been only six months old.

Police in London have said that Sobcyzk killed his child after violently shaking and assaulting him in a fit of rage.

Speaking about the incident, detective inspector Julie Willats of the Homicide and Major Crime Command said:

I am pleased the jury saw through his lies and convicted him today. Cases involving the deaths of children are always incredibly difficult for all concerned and I would like to thank those who gave evidence in this case.

She also said that Piotr Sobczyk had changed his story a number of times to try and imply that his child’s death was an accident out of his control.

The incident happened on Friday 23 January this year.

Shortly before 2pm that afternoon the London Ambulance Service was called by Sobcyzk to the family home, where his son Oskar was lying unresponsive.

Arriving at the home, medics found the child lying on the sofa “cold and lifeless”, suffering from cardiac arrest.

Over the following weekend he was transferred between hospitals, before being declared dead on the morning of Monday 26 January.

A post-mortem showed that Oskar had died from a head injury that was influenced, no accidental, and that he had a number of older injuries.

His father initially told police that he had been cleaning the flat when he noticed Oskar wasn’t breathing in his cot. He then later claimed that Oskar had accidentally fallen off a sofa while he was out of the room.

Giving evidence he later stated that he had shaken Oskar “gently” while trying to resuscitate him.

While it was unclear exactly what happened, the prosecution in the case contended that Sobczyk has lost control and assaulted his son.

After Oskar was hospitalised, Sobczyk attempted to take his own life by suicide.

A search of the address where the incident happened found traces of Oskar’s blood, indicating that Sobczyk had attempted to clean up the evidence prior to the ambulance arriving.
