Unemployment down to 13.7 per cent as 20,500 find work

The latest official CSO figures show 20,500 more people working in the last year, while 9,400 left the labour force.

IRELAND’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE fell to 13.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2013, thanks to a combination of more people finding work and others leaving the labour force.

The latest Quarterly National Household Survey from the CSO shows that 1,845,600 people were at work in the first quarter, while unemployment was down to 292,000.

The numbers employed are down by 3,300 since the last quarter, but are up by 20,600 in the last year.

The number out of work, meanwhile, was down by 2,600 in the last quarter.

Much of the increase in the last quarter comes from a 10,100 increase in the numbers who were ‘underemployed’ – a category including those who work part-time, but who would prefer to be in full-time work.

298,500 people are in this category, while a further 155,900 were categorised as being content with part-time work.

There are 1,391,100 people in full-time work, a decrease of 3,700 in the last year and down by 7,600 in the last quarter alone.

Meanwhile, 251,200 people are unemployed and seeking full-time work, while 28,800 are seeking part-time work and 12,000 are hoping to become self-employed.
61.8 per cent of those out of work have been unemployed for twelve months.
