Boston bombings

Interpol issues global security alert at US request

Meanwhile, security staff are out with sniffer dogs checking the location of the finish line for the London Marathon, which takes place tomorrow.

INTERPOL HAS ISSUED a global security alert in connection with the Boston marathon bombings, at the request of US law enforcement authorities, the international police organisation said today.

Interpol said in a statement:

Interpol has issued an international security alert, or Orange Notice, detailing the features of the improvised explosive devices used in the Boston marathon bombings to assist law enforcement across its 190 member countries detect any similarly configured bombs.

It said that police worldwide are urged to provide the FBI with any relevant information to the Boston bombings case.

Its alert was requested by the US authorities and contains photos of the devices and the fingerprints of the two suspects: 19-year-old Dzhokar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26.

Interpol said the request will enable police services and other law enforcement agencies  around the world to advise US law enforcement authorities whether they have come across similarly-designed devices in their own investigations.

A sanitised version of the alert is being issued to the public.

Interpol’s notice to its members was issued after Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shoot-out with police but before Dzhokar Tsarnaev was captured after a day-long manhunt yesterday in a Boston suburb.

The Boston marathon bombings was the worst such attack in the United States since the September 11, 2001 atrocities . Three people were killed and about 180 were wounded.

Interpol has also congratulated US law enforcement officers and the public for the “swift resolution” of the “extraordinary” investigation. Secretary General Ronald K Noble said it was “a credit” to:

the successful and effective investigative work involving the FBI, state and local US law enforcement authorities as well as exceptional cooperation from the public.

Meanwhile, security personnel have been checking vehicles at the Mall in central London today. That is the location for the London Marathon finish line, and London’s police force says it will have 40 per cent more officers on duty at the marathon than last year, due to the bombings in Boston.

The Virgin London Marathon is a high-profile event that attracts entrants from around the world. The 26.2 mile long event will see more than 35,000 runners taking to the streets of London tomorrow for what the organisers say is the greatest fundraising event on the planet.
