US says has ‘eyes’ inside Iran nuclear programme

Israel has insisted the threat of Iran developing a viable nuclear weapon was becoming more “urgent” – but Washington has indicated diplomacy remains the best option.

IN REMARKS SEEMINGLY aimed at Israel, the United States said Friday it had “eyes” and “visibility” inside Iran’s nuclear programme and would know if Tehran made a “breakout” towards a nuclear weapon.

Washington also indicated it had not changed its view that Iran was not yet on the verge of building a nuclear bomb, despite Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak’s statement that US intelligence now viewed the threat as more “urgent.”

The latest signs of differing public stances from the United States and its ally on Iran came on a day when speculation ran rampant in the Israeli press about a possible strike against Iran’s nuclear installations within months.

‘Agreed’ about Iran’s ambitions

White House spokesman Jay Carney declined to comment on intelligence matters but said that Washington and Israel were agreed about Iran’s ambitions for its nuclear programme.

“I would also say that we have eyes — we have visibility into the programme, and we would know if and when Iran made what’s called a breakout move towards acquiring a weapon.”

Breakout capability is commonly understood to be the point when a state acquires the knowledge, capability and materials to build a nuclear bomb if it wants to.

Carney said later in his briefing that he was referring to International Atomic Energy Agency officials mandated to inspect Iran’s nuclear sites because Tehran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

But many experts believe there has also been substantial infiltration and sabotage of Iran’s nuclear programme by Western and Israeli intelligence agencies.

Military sites in Iran that do not have confirmed nuclear activities are off-limits to inspectors unless provided for by agreement.

Diplomacy

Though the Obama administration has not taken the military option off the table, Carney said “there is time and space to pursue the diplomatic option that includes extremely and increasingly aggressive sanctions.”

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor meanwhile said that Washington continued “to assess that Iran is not on the verge of achieving a nuclear weapon.”

US officials have declined to comment directly on Barak’s remarks following a prolonged period of uneasy interaction between the Obama White House and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

But Carney’s comments appeared to be an indirect repudiation of Barak’s comment on Israeli Public Radio that it was getting tougher to assess Iran’s nuclear progress.

Barak also said the latest advances in Iran’s nuclear programme were making it difficult to say if it could be stopped “in time” — a statement Carney’s comment on Friday seemed to directly contradict.

Iranian issue ‘urgent’

The Israeli defense minister also said Thursday that a recent US intelligence report made the Iranian issue more “urgent” and had moved the US administration closer to the Israeli position.

The US perception of the exact moment that Tehran’s programme constitutes an unacceptable threat differs from that of Israel.

Washington’s statements repeatedly refer to the need to stop Iran acquiring a “nuclear weapon.”

Israel, however, believes that Iran should be stripped of the “capability” to make nuclear weapons, including the capacity to enrich uranium and to have nuclear triggers that cause a fissile reaction.

The moment at which Israel’s red lines are crossed in theory is earlier than that of Washington’s — hence the gap between the public statements of US and Israeli officials.

A series of visits by high-ranking US defense officials to Israel has raised speculation that Washington is trying to dissuade Israel from a preemptive military attack.

  • Those eyes are likely some sort of computer virus. After Stuxnet, Flame, and Gaus, which are state created viruses to specifically target the middle east, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a surveillance virus within the Iranian military that’s not caught yet.

Good to see that the Americans are not as gung-ho as the Israelis at the moment. Please let Obama get re-elected!!

  • Lets at least try to EXHAUST diplomatic efforts before we head into yet another military punch up. If we do, it will be the Iranian people who will suffer the most. We have already seen that they (the Iranian people) cannot change the government’s policies, or indeed the government itself.

A quarter of a million dead civilians later and still no sign of WMD?

  • Most dangerous nation in the Middle East? Israel.
Need solid proof of nuclear capability? Massive high security nuclear research site in the Negev. American knowledge and funding since the 60′s. I’d be more worried about Israel launching a nuclear strike on Tehran than Iran launching on Tel Aviv.

    • No Stephen israel won’t launch a nuclear attack on Tehran but it may or probably will send in fighter jets and knock out any Iranian nuclear facilities. Btw Israel is not holding any country to ransom with a threat of a nuclear strike unlike what the Iranians will do if and when they get the bomb. Israel is doing what it takes for it’s own protection.

    • Declan, do you have evidence that Iran has threatened anybody with a nuclear strike? I can’t seem to find that transcript anywhere. Also, Iran is the one being threatened here, going on your theory, maybe this is why Iran is arming itself, if they are arming themselves!

    • Nicky, No one is interested in invading Iran. This is all about the threats that Iran gives out. Remember Iran wanted to export its 1979 revolution to other Arab countries and I would suspect still does.

  • The US has stated that if any country were to place a virus/hack its completely systems that it would unequivocally be considered an act of war. The US does the same thing to Iran and does not see a problem with it. Also, let’s not forget who allowed Pakistan to become nuclear. Yes, that’s right, the US. They aided Pakistan with its nuclear development. They don’t have a leg to stand on.

    • George, that’s very interesting as I just googled Pakistan and it’s nuclear program. Nowhere does it mention help from the USA. It mentions that pakistans nuclear program was started in the 1970’s and was done covertly and done by pakistans own scientists and if I remember right when they tested their first bombs in 1998 the world was taken by surprise. So may I ask you to provide evidence or a link showing that the USA provided help to Pakistan in it’s nuclear program. Or are you once again peddling mistruths?

    • As far as I know, and I’m open to correction, the Pakistani nuclear program was funded by the Saudis. Unfortunately I have to agree with Declan on this one. I doubt that the USA had a hand in Pakistani nukes.

There is speculation that the Saudis are now calling in the favour and looking for nukes of their own sources from Pakistan.

  • Barry I see a quote on Wikipedia that Saudi Arabia would seek out nuclear weapons if Iran succeeded in getting the bomb. So interesting don’t you think that the Saudis will only do so if Iran gets the bomb and not because Israel may or may not have the bomb. Which leads me to believe that the greatest threat in the middle east is from Iran and not Israel.

A lot of them are not even full US bases and might only have limited US presence and they can just as easy be targets for Iran if there was ever a strike against Iran.

    • No doubt if Iran had a base, oh, let’s say on Cuba, it’d be considered a provocation. But these bases are not. Strange that.

Oh, and Israel is nuked to the teeth and has a record of attacking its neighbours.

The US are out of Iraq, Pakistan is an unreliable partner, Afghanistan would not allow its territory to be used to attack Iran, the former Soviet states have close relations with Russia and are mostly used for transporting supplies to Afghanistan, the US has been in Turkey and Gulf States for years. Anyway the Iranians have everything under control

How do you know this for certain given that they have neither confirmed nor denied it at any stage? We can all speculate, but please don’t try and pass it off as fact until there is proof.

    • Mattoid, although there is speculation towards how many nukes Israel have, it’s pretty much common knowledge that they are armed with nukes.

Generally believed to have them, agreed (I think in all likelihood they do) but the only people that know for sure are Israel and possibly the US.

    • matt, I guess well find out before the year is out… according to Ephraim Halevy, former chief of Mossad, an Israeli strike on Iran is going to happen within the next 3 months. I think we all know how badly Netanyahu wants to hit Iran. 2+2=…

    • No petr, Israel is surrounded by countries hostile to it’s very existence and every major Arab country in the last fifty years has attacked Israel. Now remember the best defense is to have a better offense. Which is what Israel is about.
