FOUR STUDENTS who were filmed verbally accosting a female bus monitor in Greece, New York have been suspended from school and ordered to serve 50 hours of community service.

Videos from the incident show Karen Klein, 68, being called names and berated as she sits on the bus. At one point she breaks down in tears and addresses the students, saying, “Unless you have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

A campaign was subsequently launched on Indiegogo to raise funds in support of Klein and to send her on “a vacation of a lifetime”. The campaigners initially aimed to raise $5,000 and have so far raised over $670,000.

Four students have suspended for a year in connection with the incident. They will also be required to carry out 50 hours of community service with senior citizens and will have to participate in a bullying prevention programme.

Meanwhile, Klein and her family have appealed to the public to stop bullying and taunting the children involved in the incident.

“Threatening them? No, that’s not the way to go about things, ” she told the AP. “They’re just kids. I don’t want to judge anybody or put them in jail or anything like that. I just want them to learn a lesson.”

Earlier this week, Klein was presented with an honorary school bus monitor certificate in Boston.

  • I saw that video and it was horrible the way they treated that poor woman, do these bullies not have parents or grandparents and how would they feel if they were treated in the same way. Bullies r cowards and deserve to b punished. So happy for her

  • This stuff goes on in our Irish schools and buses to teachers and fellow students regularly. Respect for each other is gone. Where did these students learn to speak to a elderly person like that or have so little regard that they’d even video themselves abusing the lady? Lack of parental supervision? Too much tv?

It was admirable of Ms Klein to defend these ‘students’ after their disgusting behaviour towards her. They richly deserve to be suspended, and their return to the school should be conditional on their never again having access to school transport. Walking there and back every day might be a good way to redirect the energy they put into taunting and humiliating that lady.

  • Delighted she is now getting the royal treatment.
…And even now she still asks for kindness towards those that was cruel to her.
Thats a woman any family could be proud to have in their ancestor tree.
    I wish her well.

  • that video is absolutely horrendous, those kids deserve more than just 50 hours community service and suspension, no manners whatsoever, and Karen must be admired in still forgiving them, not many people could do that! and I agree too with the many kids that are bullied every day, it’s so sad to think that this happens, absolutely no need for it, I’m sure the money that was raised could go to raising awareness of this situation and putting a stop to it.

  • I actually couldn’t watch very much of it, it was too upsetting.. Those kids definitely need to learn a bit of respect.

  • Absolute bastards to treat this woman like this, they are lucky she isn’t vengeful. I was abused while driving my bus last Saturday, If I record it will I get a few quid? (only kidding

  • Hey I know this is really sad and all and that poor woman didn’t deserve that at all, but take a minute to think about the thousands of children that this happens to. None of them get $650000 worth for a holiday, nor do they get any sort of honorary certificate, and ok yeah, I agree that this stuff is damaging to anyone and it’s horrific to subject anyone to that kind of abuse, but this is a grown lady who’s not attached to the school in any other way than having to supervise the children for a half hour 5 mornings a week. I shiver to think what a child who has to sit through hours and hours of that kind of abuse, in some cases 7 days a week, has to face.

  • This and other kinds of bullying is happening at every school in Ireland on a widespread basis and is being swept under the carpet by school authorities who don’t want to ‘become involved’. I say this from personal experience as a parent.

  • When I was a child such thing would never happened, would be just unthinkable. These days I don’t know… what’s wrong with people how kids are allowed so much, where do they game their priorities from? I wouldn’t even blame just parents as I remember we had in the class children from problematic families and still those kids did not behave like that. People were just different 20-30 years ago or so, people would react to children bullying or any misbehaviour I remember not once different kids got decent whacking for doing silly stuff and today are decent grown ups, all proved to be in the good cause, now you would probably end up in prison for even touching a brat. They bully woman in the bus today they shoot someone in the head in few years time…sad.

Banning reasonable corporal punishment has been an interesting but ultimately misguided social experiment and its now time for the pc brigade to face facts and admit that it has been a dismal failure.nThis incident was in the US, but the same level of disrespect is being shown to parents/teachers/authority figures/adults in general (delete as appropriate) day in and day out in Ireland and elsewhere. Not all kids are like this, but these kids just aren’t afraid of any sanctions…

    • @Richard, I don’t think has anything to do with the fact that they are American, it merely highlights the lack of respect that’s indicative in a lot of teenagers worldwide. Not that you should ever stereotype I know many young people that would never behave in such a manner however there are some out there that could do with a dose of good manners and respect! Hopefully the community service work with the elderly might give them a good kick up the ar*e!
