A VERDICT ON the death of Savita Halappanavar is expected to be delivered today as the inquest comes to a close in Galway.

Arriving at Galway Coroner’s Court this morning, her husband Praveen said the inquest had been “very tough” and he was looking forward to answering the “question always on my mind” – why his wife died at Galway University Hospital last October after suffering a miscarriage.

Halappanavar said today was particularly tough because it is the couple’s wedding anniversary. “Hopefully there’s some bright days ahead and something good comes of it,” he said.

Corononer Dr Ciaran MacLoughlin will today present a summary of the evidence given by midwives, doctors, specialists, consultants and friends, as well as 70 statements from hospital staff, which was given over the course of the last two weeks.
