AN ARMY BOMB disposal team was called to disable a viable bomb found in Loreto Park, in the Rathfarnham area of Dublin this morning.

The device was uncovered by workers in undergrowth, the Defence Forces confirmed.

Houses were evacuated and the area was cordoned off as authorities responded.

Gardaí requested the bomb disposal team, and the device was made safe at the location before being taken away for further examination. The scene was declared safe at 11.10am.

The device was later confirmed to be viable.

Material has been handed over to gardaí for their investigation.

There have now been 124 bomb squad call outs to 33 viable devices so far this year. In 2014 there were 141 call outs to 53 viable devices.
