Viable explosive device in Fermanagh car 'destined for police station'

PSNI believe the vehicle in which the device was found was due to be left at the station in nearby Lisnaskea.

PSNI OFFICERS believe a viable explosive device found in an abandoned car in Co Fermanagh was due to be left outside a PSNI station elsewhere in the county.

The device was made safe this morning, after being seen in an silver Volkswagen Bora on the Derrylin Road outside Enniskillen in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Officers believe the device – which Sky News described as consisting of explosives packed into a beer keg – was destined for the station in Lisnaskea, about 20 minutes’ drive away.

The area in which the device was found is a similar distance away from the Lough Erne Hotel and golf resort, where this year’s G8 summit will be held in June.

“Once again our community has been disrupted and the lives of residents put at risk by an element intent on causing  loss of life and disruption,” PSNI district commander Pauline Shields said.

“The people responsible for this have  no regard for the lives of anyone in our community. It is fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured as a result of this reckless act.”

Shields said the police activity needed to defuse the bomb and make the area safe had “up resources that would otherwise be dealing with community issues”.

The PSNI has asked anyone who travelled along the Derrylin to Enniskillen road late on Thursday evening, or on the early hours of Friday morning, to contact them.
