MEMBERS OF THE Occupy Dame Street movement have this afternoon begun an occupation of the Dublin City Sheriff’s office in Temple Bar in protest at the eviction of a couple from their home in Killiney yesterday.

The occupation, at the Sheriff’s office on Fownes Street, began this lunchtime.

The protesters are demonstrating against the eviction of Brendan and Asta Kelly from their home in Killiney yesterday, on foot of a court warrant obtained by Irish Banking Resolution Corporation (formerly Anglo Irish Bank) in 2010.

The bailiffs who evicted the couple yesterday were acting on foot of a warrant from the Dublin County Sheriff’s office. Sheriffs in Dublin and Cork are empowered to seize goods belonging to a debtor in order to settle outstanding debts.

Occupiers said forces seeking to evict them “could not kill an idea”.
