3 – The number of countries – including Ireland – under investigation by the European Commission due to their tax arrangements with multinational companies. Luxembourg and the Netherlands are also under scrutiny.

17 – The number of years between the Criminal Assets Bureau seizing the Kildare estate belonging to convicted criminal John Gilligan, and the property actually going on sale earlier this week. The estate is expected to sell for around €500,000.

67 – The percentage of Irish households which have seen their income reduced in the past 12 months, according to a new survey.

80 – The increase in euros of the minimum cost of legal aid. The financial contribution will increase from €50 to €130 under new rules.

118 – The size in carats of a diamond due to be sold in Hong Kong next month. It is believed to be the biggest white diamond in the world and is the size of a small egg.

400 – The length in kilometres of a human chain in Spain to call for independence for Catalonia. Hundreds of thousands of people joined hands to form the chain across the region to support their cause.

1,400 – The number of tonnes of treacle which oozed into a harbour in Hawaii, killing thousands of fish and causing problems for swimmers.

1,959 – The number of days Giovanni Trapattoni spent as Ireland manager before he stepped down on Wednesday. In a statement, he said Ireland supporters had his “utmost respect” and thanked everyone who had supported him.

57,000 – The number of hot meals that homelessness charity the Peter McVerry Trust served to people in need last year.

59,823 – The number of students who received their Junior Certificate results on Wednesday.

26,373,626 – The number of texts people in Ireland send on an average day, according to a report from communications watchdog ComReg. The figure is down 22 per cent on the same period last year.
