RTE, renters and returning to school: The week in numbers

EVERY WEEK, TheJournal.ie offers a selection of statistics and numerical nuggets to help you digest the week that has just passed.

6.49 -The amount of money fourth year student nurses and midwives will be paid per hour as part of their clinical placements. The figure is €2 less than the minimum wage, but has been defended by the HSE as a requirement of the Haddington Road Agreement.

19 – The percentage of renters who say they’ve been late with rent at least once in the past year, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

20 – The percentage of people who are in mortgage arrears who could pay their mortgage but have decided not to – at least, according to AIB chief executive David Duffy.

32 – The percentage of people who have not been able to go to the GP over the past year because they couldn’t afford it, according to a survey.

270 – The number of employees who left RTE in 2012. Staff numbers are now 21 per cent lower than they were five years ago.

785 – The amount in euro it costs to send a child into first year in secondary school, according to research by children’s charity Barnardos.

937 - The number of charges Ariel Castro faced in court this week for holding three women captive in his home in Ohio in the United States for more than a decade. The 53-year-old was sentenced to life in jail without parole.

5,748 – The number of days between the start of the Mahon Tribunal (originally known as the Flood Tribunal) on 4 November 1997 and the publication of the final chapter of the report last Wednesday.

50,000 + – The number of people who received letters from the Revenue Commissioners for not paying the Local Property Tax charge. Revenue said it is to begin taking the money from the salaries and pensions of people who have not paid.

1, 463,000,000 – The combined losses in euros of Bank of Ireland (€504 million), AIB (€572 million), and Ulster Bank (€387 million) so far this year according to results posted by the three banks.
